Pros:

  • Pre-filter makes for extremely easy cleaning.

  • Great mechanical and biological media included out of the box.

  • Slower flow makes it perfect for planted aquariums.

  • Oase is a brand known for quality. Filter feels incredibly well built.

  • 3 years guarantee as standard.

  • Incredibly quiet. Practically silent.

  • Includes heater, keeps it hidden from display aquarium.

  • Shut-off automation and safety locking mechanism prevents any unwanted water escaping.

  • Flow control, can be turned up/down if needed.

Cons:

  • Not perfectly suited for tanks with much larger bio loads ( African tanks etc )

  • Heater is only 300w making it unsuitable for tanks over 350L.

  • Includes a lot of mechanical filtration. We advise this is replaced with more biological media.

In-Depth Review:

The Oase Biomaster series is the latest and greatest offering from Oase for the indoor aquarium external-filter market. They range from the 250-850, with a 350 and 600 in-between.

Having had just over a year of hands-on experience with this filter, this is my review for everything I have found out thus far. Alongside this first hand experience, I have spoken with members within the fish keeping industry about their opinions and experiences with the filter.

The unarguable feature that makes this filter stand out from the rest is the pre-filter module. This allows for cleaning of the filter, which notably can be done under a tap in around 1-2 minutes, without having to take apart the whole unit. As someone who lives in an apartment where water spillages are most definitely not accepted, this saves me a tremendous amount of time and hassle. Furthering this, they do not allow any part of the filter to be removed until the interlocking mechanism on the filter is moved, ensuring water cannot back-syphon. These features alone, in my opinion, makes the Oase filter an amazing option when compared to other external canisters on the market; but don’t let this fool you, the filter is brimming with other technology to make your fish-keeping experience as easy as possible.

Out of the box, the filter includes a combination of Hel-X and mechanical/biological cleaning sponges. Although Oase claims these sponges support biological activity, I opted to replace all the less coarse sponges for Seachem Matrix biological media and one layer of filter floss, while leaving all the sponges from the pre-filter module.

Unlike almost all external aquarium filters, the Oase Biomaster Series can be opted to include a heater, integrated into the canister unit itself. This is another incredible feature, saving the need for either a bulky heater inside the aquarium, or an unreliable inline heating option that, unfortunately, seems destined to fail at some point. Although, the Biomaster 600 only includes a 300W heater, so be careful if you’re trying to heat an aquarium exceeding 300 litres. Compared to other filters suited to similarly sized aquariums, the Oase Biomaster series relies upon a longer time of contact between the water and filter media, meaning a slightly reduced flow rate. This, in my opinion, makes the Oase filter slightly less well suited to much higher bio loads, for example a tank of African Cichlids. Furthering this, the pre-filter module can become clogged quite quickly in such cases, which will quickly see the flow diminish.

This trade-off does however hold a lot of advantages; the Oase filter can create an extremely stable biological environment. Compared with other filters I have used, the Biomaster was the fastest to cycle by quite a considerable margin and, throughout my use, sustained an incredibly clear and healthy aquarium with almost no nitrate, despite a very well-stocked aquarium.

Although this is a drawback of the filter, the slower flow makes it perfect for planted aquariums where higher-output filters, such as the Fluval FX6, will distress the plants leading to sub-optimal conditions for their growth. All in all, the Oase Biomaster Filter series is an amazing aquarium external canister that uses technology not found on any other filter. In all my fish keeping experience, this filter is, by far, the best investment I have ever made. It saves massive amounts of time.
